Raiders coach Cable under microscope (AP)

When Tom Cable was hired as interim coach of the Oakland Raiders last year, owner Al Davis memorably whispered to a subordinate that he did not know much about him. Davis needed a media guide biography before introducing him. Just over 13 months later, the Raiders have learned quite a bit about their coach — much of it troublesome.

Giants face Chargers in Manning-Rivers matchup (AP)

Having been to the playoffs the past four years, the New York Giants have rarely referred to a game as must-win unless it was in the postseason. Things have changed dramatically with three straight losses, and more than one Giant is putting Sunday's game with the San Diego Chargers into the better-not-lose category.

Broncos Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Early this season, the Denver Broncos prided themselves on being more physical than their opponent. That changed during a rough game against Baltimore.

The Ravens manhandled the Broncos in many areas during a 30-7 loss. That’s not a good sign before Denver faces Pittsburgh, which has long been known for its physical play.

“They beat us up pretty good, no question about it,” quarterback Kyle Orton said. “We feel like we have a physical football team, and certainly Pittsburgh prides themselves on that too, so it’ll be a hard-hitting game. Whoever wins that battle is going to have a good chance to win.”

Denver put together a roster of players in the offseason that fit the physical style Josh McDaniels wanted from his team.

Chiefs Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

As the Chiefs returned from their bye week, head coach/offensive coordinator Todd Haley was determined to see his side of the football become more productive.

After seven games, the Chiefs rank 30th offensively with 251.6 yards per game. They’ve scored just 10 touchdowns, none on the ground. They are last in the league in converting third downs (21 percent) and next to last in sacks allowed (27).

Part of the offense’s problems revolves around a lack of talent. They have no big-play receivers, the offensive line has been very shaky and the running game hasn’t gotten on track. But the Chiefs also have been hampered by the decision Haley made two weeks before the start of the regular season when he fired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

That made the bye week very…

Raiders Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Raiders were spending their bye week hopeful they would recover from some debilitating injuries, attempting to upgrade a pathetic passing game and, in the back of some players’ minds at least, wondering if they were going to have the same head coach when play resumed.

A full-blown crisis situation almost anywhere else, but in Oakland, business as usual.

The Raiders entered the bye week as they did last season, with a loss to AFC West rival San Diego. It happened after Week 8 this time, after Week 4 last season, but again there was no guarantee the Raiders would have the same coach when play resumed.

Following last season’s 28-18 loss to the Chargers, a game the Raiders led entering the fourth quarter, Lane Kiffin was fired “for cause” in a move that had been…

Chargers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Chargers and Giants tangle in the Meadowlands on Sunday, two teams desperately looking for a win.

Of course that story line takes a backseat to the one few can get enough of: Philip Rivers vs. Eli Manning.

Manning was a Charger for, oh, about 45 minutes, on draft day before being trade to the Giants. Rivers was among the booty headed the Chargers way, and Sunday marks the first time the two quarterbacks will square off against each other as starters.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said if he were just a fan, he would be watching those two big names from one of the NFL’s most celebrated drafts.

“Sometimes rivalries are just naturally built because of where you are drafted, and then there is the trade aspect of it,” Tomlinson said.

Pro Bowler Ty Law, Broncos agree to terms (AP)

Defensive back Ty Law has agreed to terms on a deal with the Denver Broncos. Kevin Poston, Law's agent, confirmed the news Friday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. The agreement came after Denver's media availability and a Broncos spokesman said the team had no comment. Law is expected to sign the deal Saturday, pending the passing of his physical.

Trailing at half in last 4 games, Broncos looking to rev up their offence (The Canadian Press)

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Denver Broncos' 6-1 start puts them among the league's elite. Their inability to score on their opening drive, however, places them among some dubious company.

Broncos looking to rev it up to stop slow starts (AP)

The Denver Broncos' 6-1 start puts them among the league's elite. Their inability to score on their opening drive, however, places them among some dubious company. The Broncos have been outscored 39-24 in the first quarter and they've trailed at halftime four straight weeks. They learned Sunday at Baltimore that they can't keep counting on their second-half surges to carry them.
